Technical information Checking your equipment

Technical information Checking your equipment

During progression in a canyon, the equipment undergoes extreme use. The harness and all the equipment is put to a rough test: rubbing and repeated impact against the rock cause significant abrasion, particularly on slides. Alternating between immersion in water and then drying accelerates the wear on the fabric.

Canyoneering Grading & Gear Introduction (Sample Outline)

Canyoneering Grading & Gear Introduction (Sample Outline)

All I want is a shoe that I can hike in all day, climb in reasonably well, swim, go in and out of water without discomfort, that offers enough support for carrying a large pack, that holds up well and is inexpensive. Also, I want to toss them in the back of the car for a few weeks after a trip, and not have them rot or change size. Is that too much to ask? I guess not, because Five-Ten has recently developed a shoe that works really darn well. The Five-Ten Canyoneer is great. The sticky rubber gives a lot of confidence in dicey situations, and the shoe is self draining and totally synthetic. Since I wear a somewhat heavy pack all the time, I added a Spenco footbed to get a little more support.

Petzl Pirana – a Canyoneer’s Rappelling Tool

Petzl Pirana – a Canyoneer’s Rappelling Tool

The Pirana is a Figure Eight based Rappel Device made by Petzl specifically for canyoneering. It has several friction settings, so the correct friction for the rope/canyoneer/situation can usually be found with little hassle. It is quick to put on the rope, and quick to take off. For Class-C canyoning, like in Ouray, the Pirana performs well in waterfalls, because it tolerates of twists in the rope and of debris tangled in the rope. If you have to do rescue stuff, it offers opportunities for locking off quickly and easily and for rappelling with two people (not covered in this chapter).
